Portal Stories: Mel – It’s a mod Review

Ever wanted to see what it was like for Aperture Labs back in 1952? Well now you can with this amazing mod for Portal 2! Let’s dive into the story of Mel.

Set in the Portal universe, Portal Stories focuses on Mel; another unfortunate human in the Aperture facility. The story starts off in 1952 and as you take a long cryogenic nap, you wake up, well, for non-spoilers sake, not in 1952 anymore. On your puzzle solving adventure, you’ll meet a new personality unit called Virgil and discover a threat that needs to be dealt with. Where in the two Portal games does this mod take place in? Well, after being in 1952 in the beginning, it takes place between the gap of Portal 1 and 2.

So after finally beating the game in two days (it felt longer!), right off the bat I can say that this mod is fantastic! Everything about it is just amazing from the great detail and likeness of the facility to the challenging levels to the story.

Let’s start with the environment. A lot of work has been put into making this mod look like it’s DLC from the actual creators of Portal. The physics are near perfect to the main game, the levels have the same if not better atmosphere, and the cut scenes are amazingly animated and rendered. And to top it off, they throw in a few Easter eggs that are pretty well hidden, but too difficult to find.

Let’s talk about the levels. God were those levels hard! But I like a challenge especially from a puzzle game. But seriously, I had to look at the YouTube guide for three of the levels. I’m not proud of it, but I was getting frustrated. If they ever make more, I promise not to use the guide……much.

Now I can’t say too much about the story without giving out too much, but trust me when I say that the story was pretty freakin’ great! Not as much twists as Portal 2 (like the damn cake!) but still very satisfying. Seriously, if you like puzzles and Portal games, I highly recommend this mod. It’s free on steam and you don’t have to have Portals 2 installed to play, but you do have to at least own it. Well, that’s all from me! I think I’m going to make some custom levels in Portal 2 since I’m in the Portal mood. Thank you guys for reading and until next time, Let’s Make Magic!
