It takes a fellowship to take down a conniving power that is running rampant across the land. What would you do if you had the ability to save a nation? It will take more than just one kingdom to fight the good fight against the imperial army. However, it will literally take about an hour and a half just to fight some monkey’s in the darn forest and then another few hours just to get to another gameplay scene. I guess the imperial empire just needs a good talking too before we get into some combat! Welcome to this review of Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth coming to the PlayStation 4 and PS Vita and oh boy are we in for a long ride.

We do all dream of escaping this reality/world, heading someplace new and exciting and most often becoming something special. In anime and manga there are countless series that fall under similar guidelines. You often get the main character who either dies, stumbles upon an object/location, is playing a game or even occasionally is summoned and ends up stuck in a new world. The powers that be or maybe even the journey through dimensions that the soul goes through will often imbue the MC with some unique power or maybe he will maintain his memories of his past life and that will provide him with a unique advantage in the new world.

Love of Underdogs, but not the Comebacks

There are different kinds of comebacks. There is the typical kind, like in boxing where Ippo makes a comeback to win. A perfect example is his fight against Woli where just one hit at a time, a small goal to a bigger result was needed to come back and win. Another kind is the rehash; a return from obscurity by remaking what they know is a winner. Sadly this has been the bane of most people and has resulted in some real hit or misses (Tmnt, GI Joe, countless versions of Superman). Last is the remake, similar to the rehash, but without going against the original it is more about just making it prettier. Examples include Star wars and countless games which got a face lift for the next gen consoles.

As I have gotten older and wiser, mostly just older…and maybe lazier…I have been stuck in this belief that as things get sequels and reboots and the like that the quality just suffers as a result. It’s like instead of getting that pure orange juice that you first tasted, you get a watered down rehash and they continue whittling away at the original till you get something worse than Tang.

The shining jewel of Morikawa Jyoji is a boxing series (yes a sports manga, but an actual good one). This was actually one of the first manga series I ever read, in some old Shonen Jump my brother had ‘acquired’ from somewhere I read a random chapter that had the tail end of one of the fights.

After all, justice in this world is just a bunch of principles, made by those with power to suit themselves.

We all grew up being thought a certain semblance of principles and morals, a code of ethics to follow to know what is right or wrong. We all know what a hero is and what a villain is, we are told that heroes are good and to be one, to fight the villains and that crime doesn’t pay. But tell me; haven’t we all once or twice rooted for the bad-guy? Thought that the villain looked cooler than the hero or wished to just have that freedom to do what we want and get what we want? I know I have, plenty of times (Heck, I even have my villain name picked out if I ever get super powers).

If gaming became a reality, how would you fair?

It always starts the same damn way, it is never safe to play a new video game especially not a virtual reality game. They just always seem to lead to death or trouble. You have classics like the .Hack// where a mysterious virus in the game was killing players in real life. Now you figure that they would have learned their lesson after one incident but then there is .hack//cell and .hack//liminality and .hack//roots and several others. There is even a map to help figure out the timeline of all these plots revolving around people continuously diving into this game that is killing them.

Vampires on average are the most overpowered and overused of monsters in all popular media the world over. Now this isn’t to say they aren’t amazing in their own right, but they are often considered the “peak” of monsters. In Rosario Vampire they are one of only a handful of S rank monsters, in the same league as the nine tails and demon lords and more recently in Soul Cartel. It is a korean manwha (yeah, I read everything from manga to manwha to comic books to light novels) that is supposed to be the continuation of sorts to the story of Faust. In this manwha a kid in modern day Korea ends up encountering the ArchDevil Mephistopheles and makes a contract with him and the reincarnated Faust to continue their duel from the past. Throughout the story you see multiple demons, angels, exorcists and even witches as well. The characters go through many challenges and travel through multiple levels of hell as they grow stronger as the enemies do as well. There was a certain balance between the characters till out of nowhere they decide to include vampires now too… The “formerly extinct ancient vampire race whose power is on par with archangels and archdemons” Now I have no issue with adding in new monsters into a series as long as it makes sense, but it is the attack power that was given to them that bothered me.

This has been stated in many places but I noticed it myself too, lately more and more anime & manga fans being overly obsessive with their taste and in thinking they “know better” than others. There are people who get made fun of or taunted for liking and enjoying a show that the internet collective thinks is bad. It’s like they think just because they like or dislike something then everyone else must too or they are wrong. It has gotten to the point where they’re immediately dismissed from any sort of forum or group just because they enjoy a particular show. What’s more concerning is that there are people who put on a facade and “stop” liking shows that they actually liked to maintain an image of being an anime or manga expert. On average it’s for liking a series that is considered mainstream or commonplace. The biggest examples tend to be the shonen trio (One Piece, Naruto, Bleach) or other popular series. It’s like once a series is well known, it becomes taboo to love.

Things are heating up on this latest episode of Triage X as the team keeps dealing extreme surgery on the city while having to deal with a new Pyro player acting out the same style of justice, but with more flare. The Lesions are starting to spread and the team is in for a long evening now that there is a new virus plaguing the streets.
